The company was established by Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, and D.W. Griffith in 1919. In 1981 the company was purchased by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and merged to form MGM/UA Entertainment. It operated as a subsidiary unit within MGM/UA until the sale of the company in 1986.
