A young soldier faces profound disillusionment in the horror of World War I. Paul Baumer and his friends, a group of German schoolboys, are pursuaded to enlist by their very patriotic teacher. As they witness the death and mutilation all around them, boyhood ideas about the glory of battle disappear, leaving them angry, frightened, and horrified.
